Refreshing Matcha Lemonade

Delightfully vibrant and refreshing matcha lemonade is the perfect summer drink to cool off. This refreshing drink is a little sweet, minty, and with a hint of an earthy taste to it.

To make this matcha lemonade, you only need a handful of ingredients. With a little shake and stir, you will have a perfectly balance and delicious lemonade that is ready to be enjoyed.

What is Matcha Tea?

Matcha is Japanese green tea that is processed into a fine ground powder form. Unlike green tea leaves you may be used to, matcha is much more concentrated. Making matcha very high in antioxidant and can improve your health in many ways, including:

  • May reduce cell damage and prevent chronic disease
  • Could risk of liver disease
  • May improve attention, memory, and reaction time
  • May inhibit the growth of cancer cell
  • Could decrease several heart disease risk factors
  • It helps increase metabolism and fat burning

What You Will Need To Make This Matcha Lemonade

Matcha green tea powder

When it comes to matcha green tea powder, I always look for certified organic matcha. I also look for ceremonial grade matcha with third-party testing done for heavy metals, microbes, pesticides, radiation, and more. Because of where the matcha is grown, third-party testing is necessary to ensure you get the premium quality matcha you paid for. You don't need to buy the most expensive matcha, but find one with a bright green hue and tastes good to you.

To make this ice matcha lemonade, you will need to dissolve the matcha powder with a small amount of hot water. Once it is dissolved, you can add it to cold water. The best way to dissolve matcha powder is to sift your matcha using a fine mesh tea strainer. Straining the powder allows the matcha powder to dissolve easier in water without forming any clumps. You can then whisk your matcha mixture until you get a good layer of froth. If you have a frother available at home, you can use your frother wand instead.

And because matcha green tea does contain caffeine, this matcha lemonade is best to be enjoyed during the day.

Freshly squeezed Lemon Juice

If you never had matcha before, they can taste a very bitter and earthy note. If you picked a matcha that you don't love, this matcha lemonade recipe would help to add flavors to it without you having to throw out unwanted matcha (especially when matcha can be so expensive).

With some lemon juice and lime juice, it can really balance out these strong notes of matcha and give it a refreshing taste. These citrus juice can tone down the bitterness and mellow out the earthiness.

If you would like to have a sweeter matcha lemonade without adding added sugar like simple syrup or refined sugar, you can use pink lemon instead. Pink lemon is an excellent alternative to traditional lemons as they are naturally sweeter.

You can either use fresh lemon and squeeze it yourself or purchase store bought freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice

I used half of a lime to give the matcha lemonade an even more bright and vibrant taste. Lime juice can give your matcha lemonade a zesty and tart taste to the matcha lemonade. If you are not a lime lover, you can opt out of this or add a slice of fresh lime instead.

Maple syrup

To sweeten my matcha lemonade, I used maple syrup in this matcha lemonade recipe. You can use other sweeteners or your personal favorite.

Some of the healthier sweeteners you can use to make this matcha lemonade are honey, dates syrup, coconut sugar, and molasses. If you are planning on using textured sugar like coconut sugar, you should dissolve it with the matcha in hot water or else your matcha lemonade has an even sweetness.

Add color and texture

To give the matcha lemonade a more appealing color and texture, add other fruits or herbs. For this recipe, I added sliced lime, mint, and blueberry. But, feel free to add your favorite herbs and fruits to give the drink pop.
