Ingredients

  • 2 cups water (still or sparkling, depending on your preference)
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 lime
  • 1 teaspoon matcha green tea powder
  • 1-2 tablespoons maple syrup (adjust according to your desired sweetness)
  • Ice cubes
  • Decoration: Sliced Lime, Blueberry, Mint

Directions

1. To begin, extract the juice from the lime and lemon. Halve and gently press them to release the juice, ensuring no seeds are included. Set aside the fresh citrus juice.

2. Combine the lime juice, lemon juice, and maple syrup in a pitcher. Stir well to ensure the maple syrup is fully dissolved.

3. In a different cup, place the matcha powder. Slowly pour a small amount of warm water into the matcha powder and whisk vigorously with a matcha whisk until the powder is completely dissolved and a smooth paste is achieved.

4. Transfer the prepared matcha paste to the pitcher containing the mixture of lime and lemon juice. Stir well to combine, ensuring the matcha is evenly incorporated.

5. Add the water to the pitcher, whether still or sparkling, and mix thoroughly. Modify the amount of water according to your preferred intensity and desired level of dilution.

6. Place ice cubes into glasses and pour the matcha lemonade mixture over the ice.

7. Drop a handful of fresh blueberries into each glass, allowing them to float and infuse their vibrant flavor.

8. To enhance the presentation, place a slice of lime on the rim of each glass or in the matcha lemonade. With each sip, this will add visual appeal and provide a hint of citrus aroma.

9. Give the matcha lemonade a final stir, allowing all the flavors to harmonize.

Refreshing Matcha Lemonade

Tips & Notes

Whisk matcha thoroughly: When preparing the matcha paste, ensure the powder is fully dissolved and no clumps remain. Use a whisk or a matcha bamboo whisk (chasen) for a smooth and frothy consistency.

Adjust water quantity: The amount of water you add can be adjusted to your preference for the strength of the matcha flavor. Add more water for a milder taste or less water for a stronger matcha kick.

Add ice just before serving: To keep your matcha lemonade chilled and prevent dilution, add ice cubes to the glasses just before serving. This will help maintain the desired flavor concentration.

What is Matcha Tea?

Matcha powder is derived from the finely ground leaves of green tea. It stands out for its vibrant green color and distinct flavor profile. Matcha is known for its earthy, grassy notes with a slight bitterness. Additionally, it contains abundant antioxidants, particularly catechins, known for their potential health advantages, such as enhancing metabolism and inducing a sense of relaxation.

What Ingredients You Will Need To Make Matcha Lemonade

Matcha Green Tea Powder

Matcha green tea powder is the key ingredient to make this iced matcha lemonade. Different brands of and grades of matcha will produce different taste and flavor results. High-quality matcha has a smooth, rich, and complex flavor profile. It often exhibits a perfect balance between sweetness and umami, a savory depth highly prized in Japanese cuisine. Low-quality matcha tends to have a more pronounced bitterness, often overwhelming the other flavors. This bitterness can be due to over-oxidation, older leaves, or improper processing.

Freshly Squeezed Lemon Juice

Some fresh lemon juice can really balance out these strong notes of matcha and give it a refreshing taste. Lemons lend a vibrant citrus flavor to the matcha lemonade, complementing the earthiness of the matcha and adding a refreshing and revitalizing touch. Like limes, lemons are also packed with vitamin C and provide a burst of acidity.

When preparing this matcha lemonade, you have two options for acquiring the lemon juice: either using fresh lemons and squeezing them yourself or opting for store-bought freshly squeezed lemon juice.

Freshly Squeezed Lime Juice

Limes are small, round citrus fruits with a bright green color. Their tangy and acidic flavor introduces a revitalizing and lively dimension to the matcha lemonade. Limes are known for their high vitamin C content and their ability to provide a zesty kick, balancing the sweetness of other ingredients.

Maple Syrup

Maple syrup is a natural sweetener extracted from the sap of maple trees. It offers a unique, caramel-like taste that splendidly complements the tanginess of lime and lemon. Maple syrup adds a touch of richness and complexity to the matcha lemonade, enhancing its overall taste profile. It is widely embraced as a wholesome substitute for refined sugars, imparting a subtle touch of natural sweetness.

Some of the healthier sweeteners you can use to make this matcha lemonade are honey, date syrup, coconut sugar, and molasses. If you plan on using textured sugar like coconut sugar, dissolve it with the matcha in hot water, or else your matcha lemonade will be unevenly sweet.

Blueberries

Fresh, petite, and sweet blueberries infuse the matcha lemonade with a burst of flavor and a vivid hue, enhancing its overall appeal. They infuse their natural sweetness and subtle tartness into the delicious drink, contributing a delightful fruity element. Blueberries are rich in antioxidants and are often celebrated for their potential health benefits, including supporting brain health and reducing inflammation.

Sliced lime

Sliced lime is a decorative element and an aromatic enhancer for matcha lemonade. The addition of sliced lime imparts a touch of sophistication to the beverage, elevating its visual allure. It also releases its citrusy aroma into the lemonade, enhancing the overall sensory experience.

Water

Water serves as the base for the matcha lemonade, diluting the flavors and providing the desired consistency. Depending on your preference, you can choose between still water and sparkling water. Still water creates a smoother texture, allowing the other ingredients to shine, while sparkling water adds a subtle effervescence, adding a refreshing fizziness to the drink.

Ice cubes

Ice cubes are essential for keeping the matcha lemonade chilled and refreshing. They play a crucial role in preserving the drink's ideal temperature while preventing excessive dilution. The ice cubes also contribute to the overall texture, providing a cool and crisp sensation with each sip.

How To Elevate Homemade Matcha Lemonade Recipe

Experiment with different citrus fruits

While the classic combination of lime and lemon is fantastic, you can explore other citrus fruits to add a unique twist. Consider incorporating orange, grapefruit, or even yuzu for an exotic touch. These variations will introduce new flavors and aromas to your refreshing matcha lemonade.

Infuse with herbs and spices

Take advantage of matcha lemonade's versatility by infusing it with fresh herbs or spices. Mint, basil, ginger, or lavender can bring delightful and aromatic nuances to the beverage. Add the herbs or spices to the pitcher and the other ingredients, allowing them to steep and infuse their flavors.

Garnish with edible flowers or citrus slices

Elevate the visual appeal of your matcha lemonade by garnishing it with edible flowers, such as pansies or violets, or citrus slices, like orange or grapefruit. These colorful additions will make your drink look even more enticing and elegant.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I use any matcha powder for matcha lemonade?

For optimal flavor and a vibrant green hue, opt for high-quality matcha powder. Look for ceremonial-grade matcha or culinary-grade matcha specifically intended for drinking. Refrain from using cooking-grade matcha, as it may not deliver the desired taste and texture.

Can I use lime or lemon juice concentrate instead of fresh juice?

While fresh juice is preferred for its vibrant flavor, you can use lime or lemon juice concentrate as a substitute in this green tea lemonade recipe. Nevertheless, it is important to be mindful of the concentration and adjust the quantity accordingly, as concentrates can be more potent than freshly squeezed juice. Begin with a smaller amount and gradually increase until the desired taste is achieved.

How do I ensure that the matcha powder dissolves completely in the lemonade?

To ensure the matcha powder dissolves properly, it's essential to create a smooth paste by gradually adding a small amount of warm water and whisking vigorously until no clumps remain. This paste can then be incorporated into the lemonade mixture, ensuring proper distribution of the matcha flavor.

Is Matcha Lemonade healthy?

Yes! This matcha lemonade is very healthy as it is made with wholesome ingredients and free from excessive sugar, artificial flavorings, and fillers in the matcha mixture.
