Store brought jam is often packed with sugar, additive, artificial flavors, artificial coloring, and preservatives. Sometimes, there is more sugar and flavor than the actual fruit itself. Yikes! With homemade, you can control what goes into your jam and make it to your liking. Often time, the homemade jam contains fewer calories and less sugar than store brought. So, homemade jam not only tastes good but it is better for you.

What Ingredients Do You Need To Make Chia Jam?

Making your own homemade chia jam is super easy. You can use as little as only two ingredients to make your homemade chia jam. All you need is your favorite fruit and chia seed. To preserve your homemade jam, add lemon juice and a pinch of salt. If you like your jam on the sweeter side, add your favorite sweeter such as honey, maple syrup, coconut sugar, or date syrup. My favorite way is not to add any sweetener to my jam and determine how much sweetener to use later based on what I am using it on. For example, if I am using the jam on toast, I will drizzle some honey on top.

Fruit you can make jam with

You can make jam with pretty much any kind of fruit, even frozen fruit. But some of my favorites include berries, peach, apricot, or grapes.

Go Fancy With your Jam

You can go fancy with your jam by adding floral water such as rosewater or orange blossom water. You can also add dried flowers like lavender or rose into your jam.

Which Sweetener To Go With

Depends on your personal preference, you may want to add additional sweetener. If you do enjoy sweeter jam, let the fruit rip. The more ripe the fruit is, the sweeter it will be.

How To Thicken Jam without pectin?

When you buy jam from the store, they are often made with the addition of pectin. Pectin is a thickening agent. Without a thickening agent, the jam would be softer and looser.

You can thicken the jam without pectin. You can achieve similar consistency with cooking time and the amount of chia seeds you use. When chia seeds expose to liquid, it will expand and create a gel like texture.

Chia seeds are considered one of the healthiest food on the planet. Even though they are tiny, they are packed with nutrients that can impact your body and brain. These tiny black seeds are packed with fiber, high-quality protein, omega 3 fatty acids, and various micronutrients.

How To Make Chia Seed Jam in 5 Easy Steps

1. Cup your favorite fruit into even smaller pieces.

2. In a small/ medium sauce pot, throw in your chopped fruit. Let it cook for about 10 minutes on low heat. You will notice the mixture is starting to get juicy. Avoid using medium or high heat because you can burn your fruit.

3. Start mashing the fruit. Either use a spoon or a masher, mash any chunky fruit left. Let it cook for another 5 minutes. If you are going fancy, you can throw in additional ingredients at this pint. 

4. Once all the fruit is cook down, turn the heat off and add your lemon juice. Stir well.

5. Add the chia seeds in and mix them in well. Make sure your chia seeds are stirred well in there so it can absorb all the liquid. Transfer the hot jam to a jar and close the lid. Let your chia seeds jam cool down on your kitchen counter and then place it in the fridge.

How Long Does Homemade Chia Seed Jam Last 

If your never opened your jam and its been storing in the fridge, in general, it can last up to a year.

Once you do opened your homemade jam, you should finish it within a month before it goes bad.
